Dane Mitchell: The Barricades
13 November - 12 January 2007
Starkwhite is pleased to present a new project, The
Barricades by Auckland-based artist Dane Mitchell, from 13
November to 9 December 2007.
The Barricades finds its beginnings in a non-linear
archive of over 300 hundred images collected by the artist, of
civilian-built street barricades. The archive - presented here as a
double volume limited edition publication, provides the central
axis around which the work pivots. Recent raids by New Zealand
Police on various groups under the Terrorism Suppression Act
provide the backdrop for this reflection on anachronistic
revolutionary praxis. It is through varied outcomes - an archive,
text, drawings, objects and multiples that The Barricades seeks to
explore strategies of dissent and collectivity.
In 2008 Mitchell will stage a major solo exhibition at Gertrude
Street Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne in February 2008 and
later in the year he will be artist in residence at Gasworks,
London (October - December). He has also produced a new multiple
work for the forthcoming issue (November '07) of North Drive Press
- a New York based project (www.northdrivepress.com), with an
accompanying essay by Christian Rattemeyer, Associate Curator of
Drawings, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.
Mitchell graduated with a BVA from Auckland Institute of
Technology in 1998. He has exhibited widely both nationally and
internationally including: Mystic Truths, curated by
Natasha Conland Auckland Art Gallery (2007); Rules of
Engagement, curated by Mark Feary, Westspace, Melbourne;
Toi Te Papa Art of the Nation, The National Museum of New
Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (2007); and Thresholds: Rita
Angus Cottage at Jonathan Smart Gallery (2007); In 2006, he was the
recipient of the Rita Angus/Massey University Artist-in-Residence
Programme and staged The Consequences of Inaction at
Starkwhite. He travelled to Rio de Janeiro to exhibit a solo
project, A Abrigo ou Um Temor do Toque do Desconhecido, at
gallery A Gentil Carioca; to New York to participate in a group
exhibition at Artists Space Local Transit, co-curated by
Brian Butler and Christian Rattemeyer; to Santiago to participate
in the exhibition Trans Versa, co-curated by Danae Mossman
and Zara Stanhope at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo; exhibited
