Dane Mitchell

Starkwhite is pleased to present recent work by Dane Mitchell in
a new project space (accessed via the main gallery), from 10 March
to 4 April 2009.
This selection of Dane Mitchell's work, which is part a larger
body produced whilst artist in residence at Gasworks, London,
follows an ongoing line of enquiry into encounters with mysticism
and the spirit world, proposed in parallel to his engagement with a
self-reflexive critique of art world institutions. The work
produced at Gasworks explores the materialisation of that which
might be otherwise invisible - in one instance giving form to the
spoken word (spells prepared by a witch) through the act of glass
blowing. The specific components of this larger project exhibited
here at Starkwhite attempt to engage with immateriality, vision and
belief (or its suspension) in its consideration of the convergence
of real events, unreal events and illusory events.
Dane Mitchell has had solo exhibitions at A Gentil Carioca (Rio
de Janiero, Brazil), Galerie West (The Hague, The Netherlands), Art
Statements//Art39Basel (Basel, Switzerland), Gertrude Contemporary
Art Spaces (Melbourne, AUS) and Starkwhite (Auckland, NZ) in the
past two years and has participated in many group exhibitions both
nationally and internationally. In 2008 he was international artist
in residence at Gasworks, London, UK. In 2009 he will participate
in the Berliner Kunstler Programm, DAAD - a year long residency in
Berlin, Germany.
Located in New Zealand on Auckland's Karangahape Road,
Starkwhite presents a programme of artists' projects, solo shows,
independently curated exhibitions and occasional forays into new
music and other interdisciplinary practices. Starkwhite also
represents artists from New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific
rim.
