Dean Roberts plays Red Memory song-cycle
15 April 2009
Starkwhite is pleased to present a concert from Auckland-based
musician Dean Roberts on Wednesday 15 April at 8.00pm. Admission is
by a suggested donation of $10.
Red Memory song-cycle will be performed with a cast of
collaborators, which includes Matthew Sunderland (Vocals), Chris
O'Connor (Drums, Percussion) and Paul Williams (Cello).
In recent years Roberts' work has followed an unusual path from
electro-acoustic and experimental approaches to embracing song,
lyrics and voice as central elements. This has taken him into a
realm he describes as extrapolating on the song-cycle or
neo-operatic form, where complex narratives and cross reference
occur through threads and themes in the lyrics and instrumentation.
In his work the songs often become vessels for topographic and
psychoanalytic tracings of the impacts of territory and nomadism on
the subject. This is reflected in the shape-shifting nature of the
vocals and text, worm-turning arrangements and unorthodox
juxtapositions of sound and text. His work often carries a dark
humour and is littered with references to popular music of the
past, colloquialisms and folk song traditions.
Located in New Zealand on Auckland's Karangahape Road,
Starkwhite presents a programme of artists' projects, solo shows,
independently curated exhibitions and occasional forays into new
music and other interdisciplinary practices. Starkwhite also
represents artists from New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific
rim.
