Mariana Vassileva Videos
3 - 27 June 2009
Starkwhite is pleased to present an exhibition of video work by
Bulgarian-born, Berlin-based artist Mariana Vassileva. The
exhibition is presented in collaboration DNA, Berlin.
"Vassileva forms part of a new group of artists that, with roots
in Eastern Europe and with a revitalizing energy and a breath of
fresh air are expressing their creativity in our western neck of
the woods, Her work faithfully represents the hybridization of the
experiences that the young artist underwent in her move from East
to West. Her relevance, however, doesn't reside in the physical act
of movement strictly speaking, but rather in the mental processes
that underlie it. Gifted with a special and very personal
sensibility, her work also represents another type of historical
mobility: that which builds bridges between a particular, classic
iconography and its interpretation in light of contemporary mores,
as is apparent in Milkmaid. But what really characterizes the
artist is her self-referential poetics, an art which emerges from
her experience and private feelings from 'the inside outward' as
she herself says and as is evident in videos like Jumping Man,
Journal, Mirrorlight and Tango, to mention a few examples."
