Richard Orjis: Little black flowers grow, in the sky

Starkwhite is pleased to present Little black flowers grow,
in the sky an exhibition by Auckland-based artist Richard
Orjis from 25 August to 20 September 2008.
The artist says: "In my fictive and mythical world a
subterranean earth worshiping society endeavour to make links with
nature in a world that is increasingly destroying the natural as it
seeks to control it. Nature here is beautiful and dark, a dangerous
spectacle of devourers and devoured, yet still the starting point
for spiritual experience. Art history, popular culture, fact and
fiction, fear and lust, growth, decay, past and present
collide."
Recent solo exhibitions by Richard Orjis include: Welcome to
the Jungle, The Physics Room, Christchurch, NZ (2008);
Little black flower grow, in the sky, Luis Adelantado,
Valencia, Spain (2008) and Richard Orjis, Starkwhite, Auckland, New
Zealand (2008). His work has also been represented in The New
Situationists, City Gallery, Wellington, New Zealand (2007);
Arquivar Tormentas, Centro Galego De Arte Contemporanea,
Santiago, Spain (2006); Me, Me, Me, Room 103, Auckland,
New Zealand (2005); and In Faccia Al Mondo 'Contemporary
Portraits in Photography', The Museum of Contemporary Art of
Villa Croce, Genoa, Italy (2003). Forthcoming group exhibitions
include The Maui Destiny, The Suter Te Aratoi o Whakatu,
Nelson, New Zealand (December 2008) and The Enchanted
Garden, Auckland Art Gallery, New Zealand (December 2008).
Located in New Zealand on Auckland's Karangahape Road,
Starkwhite presents a programme of artists' projects, solo shows,
independently curated exhibitions and occasional forays into new
music and other interdisciplinary practices. Starkwhite also
represents artists from New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific
rim.
