Grant Stevens | Thinking Feeling | Art Stage Singapore 2015
22.01 - 25.01
Starkwhite will present a video by Grant Stevens (AUS) at Art Stage Singapore in the video section curated by Paul Greenaway, from 22 – 25 January 2015.
In Thinking Feeling a camera zooms in and around an animated constellation of words that independently pulse and orbit an invisible nucleus. The slow movements of the words and camera are reinforced by an airy, synthesised soundtrack. Over time, various phrasal combinations form and dissolve on screen. A bit like forcing oneself to sleep, Thinking Feeling picks at that fine line between controlling and letting go of thoughts. It creates small mantric loops that slip in and out of focus, playing with the liminal zones between the conscious and unconscious, between language and sensation, and between calm and irritation.
Stevens’ recent exhibitions include: MAF Video Melbourne Art Fair (2014); Video Contemporary, Sydney Contemporary (2013); Seriously, Relax, Gallery Barry Keldoulis, Sydney (2012); Burst, PICA, Perth (2010); Wobbly, Gallery Barry Keldoulis, Sydney (2009); Islands, Nature Morte, Berlin (2009); No Bad Days, Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane (2008); Education, Education, Gallery Barry Keldoulis, Sydney (2007); Cliché and Collusion: Video Works by Grant Stevens, Museum of Art, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah ((2007); Going Steady, Starkwhite, Auckland (2007); and The Switch, Il Ponte Contemporanea, Rome (2007).
