John Reynolds | Soap Box Symposium | Auckland Art Fair 2018
23.05 - 27.05
‘The scientist tries to name things,
the artist tries to avoid naming things.’
Alan Lightman
John Reynolds will run a soap box symposium at the Auckland Art Fair where visitors can engage in one-to-one encounters and conversations with the artist in a booth designed with architect Malcolm Walker. The conversations will be fuelled by ‘The Think Drink’ (aka coffee by Coffee Supreme).
Reynolds says:
“Here in the ancient sense of a ‘drinking party (bottomless coffee, thanks Supreme!) or convivial discussion’, this symposium pitches the art fair audience toward an eyeball to eyeball encounter with the captive artist.
“This may be the closest any of us get to the concept of public intellectualism, or possibly we may together chart new forms of boredom…
“There will be coffee, banter, giveaways and free medical advice, some uncomfortable chairs and a redundant typewriter.
“In this age of ‘swipe left’ social scenarios, take a seat and let the artist give you ‘a jolly good listening to’.“
