Fiona Pardington | Tarota Preview
05.10.21 – 07.10.21
We’re delighted to announce that we will be able to present our TENT project, a preview of Fiona’s Pardington’s incredible new Still Life series Torota, at Parlour Projects in Hastings. Matching the indomitable spirit of the TENT organisers themselves, who have simply refused to allow COVID to halt this project, we have somehow been able to make this happen. While sadly our Auckland team and Fiona Pardington won’t be able to attend, our Queenstown Director, Kelly Carmichael will oversee the project and looks forward to previewing this incredible show with those lucky enough to attend.
Tarota is the newest body of still lives from Dr Fiona Pardington MNZM, Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres, (Ngāi Tahu, Kati Mamoe and Ngāti Kahungunu). Named for the Tarot deck of divinatory cards and their ancient archetypal symbols, Tarota is Pardington’s exploration of her own visual vocabulary of private, and mystical symbolism. The aesthetic of the images is partly inspired by the symbolist and art-nouveau influenced drawings of the occultist and artist Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956). Pardington paints the bottles herself, embellishing them with therapeutic drawings motivated by Spare, signalling an expansion of her practice beyond the camera. Tarota sits in a liminal space between European esotericism, Māori tikanga, and Pardington’s unique personal artistic vision.
Our sincere thanks to all those who have helped make this happen including Sophie and the Parlour Projects team, Jonathan Brown, Tony and the team at John Leech Framing, Chris and the team at PCL and ofcourse, Fiona herself for once again amazing us with her ability to make such an incredible body of new work.
