Renowned British artist John Stezaker will present a lecture at Starkwhite on Thursday 17 August at 6pm. The lecture has been organized through a partnership between the City Gallery Wellington, the Elam School of Fine Arts (University of Auckland) and Starkwhite. Clinton Watkins' video Hawk (2013) has been selected for the video section of Sydney Contemporary 2017 curated this year by Serena Bentley, curator at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne. 

With two fairs under our belt this year (Art Los Angeles Contemporary, January 2017 and Art Basel Hong Kong, March 2017), we are looking forward to Sydney Contemporary in September where we will present an exhibition of works by Fiona Pardington and Michael Zavros.

Laith McGregor is one of five finalists for this year's Sidney Myer Fund Australia Ceramics Award. The winner of the $50,000 acquisitive prize will be announced on 17 June at the opening of an exhibition of the finalists work at the Shepparton Art Museum.

Fiona Pardington has been awarded an MNZM (Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit) . Announced in yesterday's Queen's Birthday honors list, the award recognizes Fiona's exceptional services to photography.

Contemporary HUM has published Nature at its Queerest, Ulrike Gerhardt's essay in response to Alicia Frankovich's solo exhibition at the Kunstverein Dusseldorf OUTSIDE BEFORE BEYOND, curated by Eva Birkenstock. HUM is a new online publication dedicated to documenting New Zealand projects abroad.

Tina Barton will present Over and Over Again – The Legacy of Gordon Walters at the Auckland Art Gallery auditorium on Wednesday 17 May from 12 – 1.30pm. Her lecture is part of a post-graduatate seminar series presented by the Elam School of Fine Arts and Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. The lecture is open to the public.

Richard Maloy has been awarded an Asia New Zealand Foundation / Creative New Zealand residency at Youkobo in Tokyo, which he will begin in April.

Michael Zavros has just completed a one-month residency at Shanghai University's Public Art Coordination Centre. During his stay he combined studio work (new paintings) with exploratory visits to other workshops able to assist with sculpture projects. His partner Alison Kubler (co-author of Art & Fashion in the 21st Century, Thames & Hudson) also gave a lecture on the art & fashion interface to students at Shanghai University.

John Reynolds is at the McCahon House for a two week stay to undertake further research for his  ongoing exploration of Colin McCahon’s ‘missing hours’ when McCahon tragically went missing in the Botanical Gardens on the eve of the launch of his 1984 Sydney Biennale satellite retrospective I Will Need Words. Reynolds’ describes his project as part missing person’s archive, part pilgrimage, part art historical vagabondage.

Perimeter Editions will launch a new publication on Laith McGregor at Starkwhite on Tuesday 14 February from 5.30pm. Contributor to the book Robert Leonard (Chief Curator, City Gallery Wellington) will speak at the launch.

We open our 2017n exhibition programme with transaction works by Billy Apple®. Opening on 8 February, the exhibition evolves into a themed show curated by Artspace director Adnan Misal Yildiz. Image: Billy Apple, P.O.A.

Rebecca Baumann has been commissioned to make over Artspace Sydney by painting each gallery wall a different colour for the exhibition Superposition of three types which explores different approaches to colour abstraction. The exhibition opens on 10 February.

Laith McGregor will take up a residency at the Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP) this year. Founded in 1998, HIAP is the largest residency programme in the Nordic and Baltic region and the studios are on Suomenlinne Island, a world heritage site. McGregor's residency is funded by the Australia Council for the Arts.

Daniel Crooks' video The Subtle Knife (2016) has been selected for the 2017 edition of Art Basel Hong Kong Film by curator Li Zenhua. The work was also exhibited at Starkwhite earlier this year in Daniel's first solo show with us titled Vanishing Point.

Starkwhite will present a group show at Art Basel Hong Kong (2017) exploring various approaches to composing or choreographing color, motion and movement. It will feature the work of pioneer experimental filmmaker Len Lye (NZ/US), along with works by contemporary practitioners Rebecca Baumann (AUS), Daniel Crooks (AUS/NZ) and Alicia Frankovich (DE/NZ), who are all represented by Starkwhite. Like our recent exhibition at Art Basel Hong Kong 2016, it will provide an historical context for a slice of contemporary practice in the region, this time by a group of innovative Australian and New Zealand-born artists who push boundaries in their work and view Lye as a source of inspiration.  Our presentation is with the generous support of Creative New Zealand.
